Anirudh Ranganathan

Hey there! My name is Anirudh Ranganathan and welcome to my Senior Research Project blog! This year, I got the exciting opportunity to conduct a Senior Research Project (SRP) and I am very excited to share my journey with you!

As a brief introduction, my name is Anirudh Ranganathan (I know, hard to pronounce right?) and I am a senior this year at BASIS Scottsdale.  These past four years have been a stressful but fun time for me with the help of my amazing teachers and friends.

When I’m not busy studying for a test or finishing my homework, I like to relax by playing the guitar, listening to music, or spending time with friends and family.  When I am feeling energetic, I usually like to play and watch sports such as basketball, soccer, cricket or football or go to the gym. But when I just want to enjoy a day inside, I frequently watch movies on Netflix or funny videos on YouTube.

As I said before, this year I have the opportunity to conduct a Senior Research Project. Given my diverse academic interests such Math, Gov’t, and Biology; I had initial difficulty choosing a topic to research about. Eventually, I chose to conduct my research project on the effects of fitness on different mood states, specifically stress.  I chose this topic as it is of particular importance to me. I personally had difficulty managing stress, and for me, fitness was one way I was able to release my stress. Sooner or later, fitness also became an interest of mine. Thus this topic was perfect as it allowed me to pursue my curiosities while continuing my hobby.

With regards to my actual project, I will be interning at Underground Fitness(pictured on the right), a personal training center, where I will shadow the owner, Matt Hoodie.  Through his guidance and the assistance of my faculty advisor, Ms. Brittany Afsa, I will able to fully delve into how fitness can affect people’s mood states. I also hope to discover the effects of physical exercise on stress and intend to share these results with the general populace.

As February arrives and I have to say farewell to my remarkable teachers and peers and to a school that I have gone to since seventh grade, I find solace in a wonderful opportunity ahead of me to pursue my curiosities.

Thank you for bearing with me through this first blog post! I hope you’ll follow me through my journey as I post weekly about my progress for the next ten weeks. If you have any questions, ideas, or suggestions with regards to my research or blog posts, do not hesitate to comment below!

  1. Anirudh,

Good first blog post here! This project seems incredibly interesting, especially since you are a stressed out BASIS student who is working on finding ways to manage and release stress! Since this is an introductory blog post about your personal background and the general information about your project, I do not have any pressing comments at this time. The only comment I have is that you tell us what your project will entail, but don't give us any specific information about methods. Since methodology is a specific aspect of the project, I would look to including a brief discussion of methods in upcoming blog posts. Great work overall, I look forward to upcoming posts!

  2. Great first post Anirudh! Naturally, I loved all the GIFs. In terms of your work at Underground Fitness, I was just wondering if you knew what you'll be doing as you shadow the owner. Will you be observing the way personal trainers work with people who come to this fitness center or learning the way a fitness center is run? I'm excited to keep reading about your senior project journey!

    1. Thanks for reading Shreya! To answer your question, I will actually be creating surveys for the clients of the owner to take and compile the data from the surveys. While shadowing the owner, I will look into which exercises could affect different mood states and how certain diets could affect mood states as well

  3. Hi Anirudh!

Nice first post! I love how you chose a topic of such personal interest and significance. I was curious about how you were going to measure stress levels and see the effect of fitness and exercise on those stress levels? I'm looking forward to reading more as you progress with this research!

    1. Thanks for reading Anjalee! To answer your question, my project focuses a lot on the psychological aspect of fitness' effect on stress. To measure the clients' stress levels, I will be creating surveys and asking the clients to take them. I then will compile the data and see if there is a correlation between fitness and stress and if fitness could lead to an overall healthier life.

  4. As a fellow BASIS student who is perpetually stressed out, I'm excited to see where this project takes you! I know you'll answer this in future blog posts, but what exactly will you be doing as you shadow the trainer? Are you going to be exercising alongside him? That's a lot of exercise.

    1. Hey Stirling, thanks for reading my first post! To answer your question, while shadowing the owner, I will be observing him and asking which exercises could affect different mood states and how dieting could affect mood states. I will also be creating surveys for the clients to take and compiling the data from that.

  5. Hey Anirudh!

Solid first post... definitely grabs my interest. As a fellow gym attendee, I hope to learn about how this all affects me, so I will definitely be looking forward to learning from you. Also, I was wondering if you had a specific research question. You mention stress and how exercise affects it, so is that your research question?

Looking forward to reading the next post!

    1. Hey Brent! Thanks for reading my first post! With regards to your question, my research question deals with how fitness and can reduce stress and affect other mood states but also how it can lead to a healthier immune system. My research focuses more on the psychological aspects of my question. I will be creating surveys that include questions such as how clients feel before and after the workout, what their stress levels are, etc. I then would compile this data to see how fitness affects different mood states.

  6. Hello!
In agreement to everyone else, going to this school is most definitely stressful. Although I already go to the gym and work out, I would love to learn how exercise helps relieve the stress and everything about it. Sounds like an awesome project and I cannot wait to see what the final product ends up being.

  11. Hey Anirudh,

Your first post really makes me ponder how "hitting the gym" can affect ones mood and how it can influence how ones day goes. Something I myself undergo a lot of stress and hope to relieve it by going to the gym. Good luck with your research!

  12. Hi Anirudh,
I had not considered any benefits of going to the gym besides getting stronger. Recently I have been a bit more stressed out. Currently I'm in the position where I keep telling myself I will go to the gym and never go. Hopefully this can be a little extra reason for me to hit the gym. Good luck with the project

  13. hey Anirudh
I never really thought there were more benefits about going to the gym beyond getting stronger and keeping the weight off. I try to go to the gym as often as I can, although school often keeps me from it. However, after reading this first post I wonder if the best thing for handling stress is to hit the gym, that would certainly give me more incentive.

  14. Hi Anirudh,
Your project idea seems really interesting because it's a great way to incorporate the stress all of us BASIS students feel on a regular basis into a research project. I also feel like this project would be helpful to teenagers in general to help combat their high stress levels. Can't wait to read more about your findings.

  16. This open door will empower you to pass judgment on the work force, the gear, and furthermore the air of the exercise center. On the off chance that, the exercise center you're anticipating join, does not give this determination, it is smarter to show up for various rec centers. Homebodyguide
